Should Canada Invest More? UK Funds £2.6 Million Center to Train Experts in Mineral Resources.

A new £2.6 million centre will serve as a multi-institution hub for doctoral training in mineral resources. The initiative, led by the University of Leicester, aims to equip experts to support the UK's transition to sustainable energy. Funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (part of UK Research and Innovation), the Training and Research Group for Energy Transition Mineral Resources (TARGET) Centre will focus on the entire lifecycle of minerals.

The University of Leicester's Centre for Sustainable Resource Extraction will offer doctoral-level training combining PhD research projects with a multidisciplinary program. This program will cover skills in mineral exploration, processing, finance, policy, and sustainability from the initial extraction to the end of a product's life.

The training will be delivered by a mix of academic researchers and industry professionals, including leading global companies in mining, mineral analysis, environmental standards, and finance. Dr. Dan Smith, the leader of TARGET, emphasized the importance of this opportunity to train researchers in addressing the challenges of mineral resource formation, extraction, and sustainable processing. For more information on how TARGET is recruiting its researchers and the upcoming cohort, visit the University of Leicester’s website.
